My first trip back to the states after 9 months of VN was definitely refreshing for the soul. There were some travel hiccups here and there, but those hiccups turned out to be little pockets of surprise.

This was officially my first trip to Chicago. I must admit that my perspectives of Chicago were a little tainted due to the many travel issues I have experienced from Chicago O’Hare. It is the airport I try to avoid as much as possible. My first few days of Chicago were not really memorable since I was working 12 hour days at a conference. But there were snip-its of fun like eating at the famous Portotillo’s Chicago Dog and experiencing deep dish pizza at Gino’s East. The last night was some much needed Mexican fare at La Cantina Grill.

The next day my colleague and I went to the airport to find a fully booked flight with an option to stay in Chicago for an extra night with some decent compensation. Heck, an extra night in Chicago wouldn’t hurt. After we checked into our free hotel, we headed back into the city on the CTA. We headed straight to the Willis Tower, formerly Sears Tower, to catch Chicago’s skyline. Our luggage was already checked in and already flying back to SGN, we did some shopping to tide us over for the night. Afterwards we headed to the free Blues Festival where we listened to free music and enjoyed the sunset as building lights celebrated the Blackhawks Stanley Cup.

The following day we head back to the airport and got on the plane. 9 hours later, we have to unexpectedly land in Seattle due to an oxygen leak in the cockpit. While everyone else is complaining about our flight getting grounded, I am totally overjoyed. Another extra night in Seattle with a flight leaving at 3pm the next day was more than enough time to meet up with my best friend. I even had time to indulge on Ivar’s right before my real flight back to SGN. I grew up on Ivars. Their white chowder is amazing.

Other than my bags lost for a couple days after my return back to SGN, this trip has made me excited for my vacation in August where Si and I will be making our way to Dallas, Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria.
