We are always willing to try the next Mexican eatery emerging in Ho Chi Minh City. There have been more misses than hits, and it is apparent by the short lifespan of each establishment. Finally, I believe there is one with long-term potential. As a long time fan of Geoffrey Deetz’s Thanksgiving menu for delivery, they have replaced the Bagels and Cupcakes shop to a Burrito Shop!
Yes, Black Cat always had some Mexican options in their chain of restaurants. But this shop is solely dedicated to their burritos, giving proper recognition from their popular burgers. Their menu is extensive with over twenty types of burritos, six types of quesadillas, and other yummy extras.
The shop has an area for seating, but we opted for takeaway on a Friday evening. An order of chips and salsa is a must have requisite as we have tasted some interesting rendition of tortilla chips in Ho Chi Minh City. These were the real deal.
We shared the smoked chipotle chicken burrito and the shredded stewed beef (Machaca) burrito. The first had wood smoked chicken breast, chipotle, garlic rice, and whole black beans. Cheese, salsa, and guacamole add to the many layers of flavor.
The winner of the two was the Machaca with tender shredded beef, bell pepper, onions, spanish rice, and black beans. The size of the burritos was a slightly smaller equivalent to a Chipotle burrito stateside. We could only finish about a burrito and a half between the two of us. The Machaca was gobbled up and the rest of the smoked chicken chipotle was a welcoming leftover for breakfast the next day. Only qualm? The flour tortilla could be a little thicker to survive the delicious juicy mess inside.
A definite extra I will order next time is the pickled jalapenos. Two complimentary small containers came with our order and it was love at first taste. I would seriously buy a jar of this stuff if Black Cat sold it at their shop. For expats missing Mexican food, specifically burritos, this is the spot![hr]
