Si’s favorite Vietnamese breakfast food is banh cuon. A dish from Northern Vietnam, it is made up of thinly steamed rice crepes filled with minced pork and wood ear mushrooms. It is topped with fried shallots, pork forcemeats, fried mung bean cake, blanched bean sprouts, and basil. Douse the banh cuon with a a good amount of nuoc cham right before eating. The textural contrasts of each ingredient compliment each other and the nuoc cham binds everything together.
Our go to place for banh cuon now is Banh Cuon Tay Ho. When we used to live in Phu Nhuan, we would go to the Phan Xich Long location every weekend. Now we go to the Dinh Tien Hoang location for takeaway as it is an easy to eat dish to take anywhere.
